What You Can Do
Nursery
Volunteers can work alongside children's workers in a nursery serving a deprived community. For many local families the nursery is a life-line, as it enables mothers to work. Facilities are basic, resources very limited, but the children are very enthusiastic and enjoy experiencing new activities making friends with visitors and learning English rhymes and songs.
Teaching
English is highly valued as a route to employment. Although English is taught in all Sri Lankan schools, the opportunity for conversation with native speakers is very limited. Volunteers will work in pairs to deliver interactive , participatory conversation lessons with children and/or adults. Training and support will be available.
Children and young people with disabilities
Working with highly dedicated staff, volunteers can help out in a local special school which does fantastic and valuable work despite extremely limited resources, There are also opportunities to support children with disabilities and their families in the community in a number of other ways, such as playing with them, taking them to the local toy library and giving the families the attention and support they rarely receive.
Decorating/Practical
It is inevitable that any resources available locally are often focused on people, not buildings, and so many of the community facilities are in poor repair. Any help you can provide, whether it’s through repainting a room, re-hanging a door or just brightening up a building, will show your respect for the community and your solidarity with the project.
